  1. Medium Ear Tag
    1. Round Ear tag
    1. Standard Ear Tag

Ear tags are a must for animal farmers. They are indicated to track, prevent theft, and control disease outbreak within your herd.

  • It’s important to have the right size of ear tag as well as one appropriate for your environment and the type of animal.

Ear tags for livestock help the farmer to manage livestock to improve identification methods.

Although the use of blank ear tags and marking pens offer maximum flexibility in numbering cattle, ink fades over time and makes it hard to read tags in the pasture/field. Thus, laser engraved pre-numbered tags ensure long-term readability and offer ease of identification of inked numbers.

Ear tags have been designed to guarantee the highest possible retention rates and are easy to apply with our ear tag applicator. They are indicated for the following:

  • To enable farmers to have visual identification of livestock (thus helps monitor their movement, health, and reproduction).
  • To help control breeding, epidemics, quarantine etc.
  • For ease of record keeping (field information) and management of livestock.

Handling Pigs

It is indicated that farmhands and stockmen who handle and restrain pigs should be shown the correct techniques relevant for the size/age of the pig. Correct handling and restraining a pig will reduce the risk of injury and stress to both the pig and stockman. Below is a list of considerations necessary for pig handling.

Equipment RequiredPersonal Safety
Safe handling areaSuitable pig boardSnares and pig catchers, if restraining older pigs for treatment 1)All livestock can be unpredictable.2)Only competent staff should handle and restrain pigs.3)Suitable protective clothing

Before restraining a pig for treatment ensure:

  • All the required equipment is ready to use.
  • The equipment is easily accessible once the pig is restrained.
  • When moving pigs, ensure the way forward is clear, secure and obvious to the pigs and ensure that the pigs are moved from dark to lighter areas with no shadows.
  • When restraining pigs, ensure the area will not pose a risk of injury to pig or stockman i.e. nonslip floor, flat sides, clear of distractions etc.

Use of snares/pig catchers for restraint

If the task will take a long time, e.g. to lance an abscess, the use of a restraining snare or snatch may be necessary to provide adequate restraint. They should only be used when absolutely necessary, and the person snaring should be trained and competent at this activity. The snare/snatch should be designed specifically for the purpose of restraining pigs and kept clean and hygienic.

Outline of use

  • Set up the area of restraint as above.
  • Control the pig’s movement with a pig board.
  • The size of the snare loop should be relevant to the size of the pig being restraint.
  • Place the snare loop in the mouth and over the top jaw and snout of the pig, and adjust the snare diameter with the rod.
  • Move the loop as far back in the mouth as possible before tightening it.
  • Hold the pole/snare securely, then use the pig board to immobilize the animal.
  • A second person can then perform the required task.
  • Release the pig as soon as possible by smoothly loosening and releasing the snare and then return the pig to its pen.
  • Pigs should not be restrained by snatching for prolonged periods.
  • Do not attempt to move the pig by pulling the pig by the snare.
  • Pigs should not be tied up by the snare.
  • Never pick a piglet up by their ear – this can cause ear hematomas – or by a front leg or tail.

The teeth clipper for piglets comes in the hand-held (plier-type) and is indicated for cutting, clipping, nipping needle teeth of piglets during veterinary farm operations.

  • The hand-held clipper is quite portable, efficient and easily adapted for various veterinary operations.
  • This instrument is useful for a variety of clinical uses at a very affordable price. These instruments will come in handy for a lot of nonsurgical procedures.
  • Kindly ensure you adhere to sanitary procedures for sterilization and storage between uses.

Handheld Teeth Clipper

The teeth clipper is an instrument used in trimming and cutting the teeth of juvenile livestock especially piglets. The teeth of piglets should be clipped as soon as possible after birth. The piglet is born with 8 teeth. If the teeth are not clipped, the sow’s (mother) udder may be injured by the suckling piglets.

  • Removal of the teeth also prevents young pigs from injuring themselves while fighting or playing.
  • This tool features a sturdy cutting blade with the spring pressure system.

Why clip the teeth of young pigs?

  • Piglets bite the sow (mother) in their fight to get hold of one of her teats and suckle. The pain caused by this disturbs the sow causing her to get up and prevent her young from feeding.
  • The cuts to the sow’s udder also allow germs to infect the udder. In their fight to grasp the teat and suckle, piglets will also bite and injure one another.
  • The simple practice of clipping the teeth as soon as possible after birth prevents these problems.

When should the teeth be clipped?

  • The piglet’s teeth should be cut as soon as possible after its birth. The teeth can be cut when the pig is only 15 minutes old.
  • The sow and her young should be separated for as short a time as possible. In order to clip the teeth, you will need either a pair of tooth clippers.
  • You will need someone to help you separate the sow and her young.
  • You will also need a box containing bedding and a clean empty pen.

Process to clip the teeth

  • If the sow is not restrained, separate her from her young and place her in another pen. Take care as the sow with a litter can be dangerous.
  • Corner the piglets and keep them together or place them in a box.
  • Hold the head and press the corner of the piglet’s mouth so that the jaws open.
  • Place the clippers on either side of one pair of teeth making sure that the tongue is not in the way.
  • Tilt the head so that the pieces of the teeth will fall out of the mouth.
  • Cut the teeth as close as possible to the gums.
  • Clean/disinfect/sterilize the clippers before using them on another piglet.
  • Operate on the rest of the litter and when you have finished put the piglets back with the sow immediately.
  • Ensure you keep young piglets warm at all times.

Water supply for pigs

Optimal water management contributes to raising healthy and profitable pigs. Major sources of water for physiological needs, including growth, reproduction, and lactation are water from feedstuffs, water from metabolic processes, and drinking water.

Pigs drink from a variety of devices and the amount of water needed daily by the pig thus depend on numerous influences, including temperature, feedstuffs, stage of production and health.

Average daily water needs for pigs

Generally, grow-finish and gestating swine demonstrate a peak in water usage in the late afternoon while lactating females consume water more consistently throughout the day. Daily water needs for pigs range from

  • Less than 1.9 liters/pig/day for newly weaned pigs.
  • Greater than 5.6 liters/pig/day for grow-finish pigs utilizing nipple drinkers.
  • About 15 liters/day for gestating females.
  • About 22.7 liters/day for lactating swine.
Signs of water deficiency in pigs include:
  • Pigs/sows drink for prolonged periods when water is available.
  • Sows lick or suck water from the floor.

Leaking drinker devices/improperly constructed troughs are major sources of excess water disappearance in production facilities. Thus, nipple drinkers (with filters) are a cost-effective solution for clean drinking water as well as the reduction in contamination.

Installation of the drinker set

This drinker set has attachment options with screws to mount at appropriate heights on the wall.

  • To minimize water losses, the right height is important..
  • When drinking, the pig’s head should be inclined upwards so that the water flows directly into the pig’s mouth.
  • This is why the nipples are placed at different heights in piglet rearing and finishing.
  • When mounting brackets with 45º angles are utilized, greater heights are necessary in order for the pig to manipulate the drinker and minimize water wastage.
