Good quality seed, Vital for agricultural development – NASC.

According to the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) good quality seeds is a prerequisite for satisfactory production and essential for agricultural development.

Mr. Dahiru Rabiu, the Special Adviser on Technical Matters to Dr. Olusegun Ojo, Director-General of the NASC, said this in an interview with Journalists on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that the importance of quality of seeds to be planted preceded either fertilization or mechanization because their efficacy depended on the seed quality adding that if the genetic potential of the seeds could not be increased, it was an indication that there was going to be a loss in the harvest.

According to him, the importance of using high-quality seeds include high return per unit area as the genetic potentiality of the crop can be fully exploited, less infestation of land with weeds and crop seeds and adaptation to an extreme climatic condition as well as cropping system of the location.Others are less disease and insect problem, easy response to fertilizer application and nutrient and high produce value and their marketability.

Rabiu advocated for the planting of high-quality seeds at all times for effective yield.

“When you plant, at least 98 percent should be able to germinate otherwise you are running at a loss. The seed is not like fertilizer, it has to germinate,’’ he said.

He also stressed the need for all seeds to be certified by the seed council to ensure a quality which is essential for good crop yields, good returns, and minimizes the likelihood of crop failure.
