Association secures 1000 hectares of land for maize cultivation.

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (ALFAN) in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, says some cooperative societies have secured 100 hectares of land in Nmueze, Emuoha Local Government Area of the state, for maize cultivation.

Mr. Roland Brown, the Chairman of the association said that the group hoped to produce over 8,000 tonnes of maize from the farmlands.

The chairman, however, said the group is yet to get off takers. He also said the off taker might need silos to store the grains if the produce is not to be used immediately.

He however expressed fears that herders could purposely graze their cattle on the farms thereby destroying the crops.

According to him, government’s preventive measures will go a long way in averting bloody clashes between farmers and herders in the country.

The ALFAN chairman said herders’ destruction of farms in the country negated Nigerian government’s campaign for investment in the agricultural sector of the economy.

Brown advised government to improve on security in the land because adequate security was crucial to the attraction of investments in agriculture and other sectors.

He also appealed to security agencies to ensure they have reliable intelligence gathering mechanism to prevent clashes between farmers and herders.
