Agency partners with tech giant to perfect seed certification .

The National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) in collaboration with mPedigree a technology giant in Africa has said it is planning to introduce an electronic seed certification system with a scratch card authentication and enhanced security features.

The Director General of the agency Dr. Philip Ojo made the developement known while signing the agreement between the agency and mPedigree at the kick off of activities towards the development and introduction of NASCODE smart seed labeling and verication system in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The system will make it impossible to fake any seed certified by the NASC  and enable farmers to check for authentication of the seed they buy through SMS by scratching the foil label on the seed pack and texting the number to a short code.

Dr. Ojo said the system will make the seed regulator respond faster and more efficiently to companies in need of certification.

“The solution we are offering will make us respond faster and more efficiently to the need of companies that require certification tags as we will now be able to provide millions of smart certification tags within a short period coupled with the roll out of an e-verification system.

The Goldkeys technology will enable quality and genuineness verification by farmers and the public through SMS, smartphone apps (with GS1 barcoding support) and web. It is also equipped with its own integrated call center desk software, he stated.

He also noted that the new system will curb farmers lost, boost productivity and enhance food security in the country.
