Nigeria has made bold steps towards becoming self-sufficient in edible oil production as it aims to increase palm production by 700 percent to 5 million tonnes by 2027. As part of the efforts, the Nigerian government recently formulated a new policy to invest some US$500 million in expanding palm oil production. The government said it will encourage investment by offering low-interest loans to farmers for oil palm cultivation and erecting barriers on crude palm oil imports. This will see the country marginally increase total edible oil production from its 2018/19 estimate of 1.0 million with forecast indicating that the country’s palm kernel oilseed production will reach 880,000 metric tons by the close of the year. CHI Farms Limited, a member of the TGI Group and one of the leading agribusiness companies in Nigeria has partnered with Germany’s AFOS Foundation to grow the capacity agriculturists in Nigeria The duo has commenced the third phase of its training programme that seeks to equip farmers with theoretical and practical aspects of best agricultural practices. The training will focus on livestock management, feed milling, hatchery, production and processing equipment. After the programme, participants will be offered employment at the company, reports This Day. Speaking at the commencement of the training, the General Manager, CHI Farms Limited, Dr. Tunji Olaitan, said the organisation has been in partnership with AFOS Foundation since 2017, mostly in areas of management training.

To internalise the backward integration policy and reduce importation of raw materials while developing the local economy, De-United Foods Industry Limited (DUFIL) has presented the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) scoping of its proposed 18,000-hectare oil palm estate and cassava flour mill to the host and government communities in Edo State. Nigeria is said to import about 500,000 metric tonnes of crude palm oil yearly, and the DUFIL proposed investment in the plantation is expected to contribute to the efforts to close the gap between production and import.To this effect, the Edo State government has given a concession of 17,954.71 hectares of land within Ekiadolor Forest Reserve in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State to the company to develop the two projects. ...

No fewer than 60 unemployed youths and women participated in a -3- day training workshop on ginger and mushroom value addition in Abuja. The workshop was organized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT). Chairman, NIHORT Governing Board, Retired Maj. Gen.
